Christine's Corner: Praying a Prayer

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

One of my favorite songs is by Kyle Matthews, a singer/songwriter who lives right here in Greenville. The song is titled "Praying A Prayer". In the song, Matthews sings of how God created this world and could choose to do things all by God's self. But instead, God invites us to be a part of creation, doing our part to bring about the kingdom. And one way to do that is through prayer.

For me, prayer can sometimes seem overwhelming and daunting. There are so many forms of prayer, different styles and ways in which we can commune with God. That is why I turn to those who have been studying prayer for years as a guidepost for me in this spiritual practice. One in particular that I have found most helpful in these days of chaos and unrest is the Instagram handle Liturgies For Parents. There have been a number of prayers from this account that I have used in my daily life to help me have the words when in many cases, I have not been able to find them. I encourage you to follow them.

Here is another prayer that I found to be helpful as we sit before our God, emptying ourselves, allowing God to move in us and move us still.

Let Your God Love You

by Edwina Gateley

Be silent. Be still. Alone. Empty Before your God. Say nothing. Ask nothing. Be silent. Be still. Let your God look upon you. That is all. God knows. God understands. God loves you With an enormous love, And only wants To look upon you With that love. Quiet. Still. Be.

Let your God— Love you.
